A foundation for continuity
We built Athena around intelligence that develops through continuing experience.
The information a model encounters should be able to contribute to what it knows later. Earlier work should remain available, useful relationships should have room to develop, and memory should remain understandable to the people who depend on it.
Athena asks how memory can become a continuing part of a model's development.
Its research brings together retention, recall and renewal: how information remains present, how it can be recovered and how that memory can be maintained as further information arrives.
Recovering what has been retained
The early experiments examined memory in purpose-built environments.
Athena demonstrated exact recovery of several distinct stored memories, including cases where the information presented at recall differed from the original encounter.
These results established a concrete foundation for investigating memory as an active process. Information could be retained and subsequently recovered even when the cue presented at recall had changed.
The memory remained available beyond the original encounter.
Developing dependable recall
The demonstrated recoveries provide a foundation for further research into dependable memory.
Athena studies how retained information stays useful as circumstances change, with a clear basis for knowing when a recalled result can be relied upon.
Investigating how memory can be renewed
Later experiments recorded successful recovery of memories whose recall had deteriorated.
This made renewed availability a concrete result of the research. Information that had become difficult to recover was accessible again.
The work gives Athena a concrete direction for developing renewal that preserves the wider body of retained information.
The research ahead
Athena carries these foundations into the continuing work of a model.
The next questions concern richer information, lasting continuity and how memory can develop while remaining faithful to what has been encountered. Making recall dependable and its support visible are central to that direction.
Athena takes this towards a model whose understanding of your work deepens through experience, with memory contributing to what it can do next.
Retaining experience. Recovering it faithfully. Developing continuity.
